Getting Started

Teledermatology allows you to consult a qualified dermatologist online through secure video, receive a diagnosis, and obtain prescriptions or treatment plans without visiting a clinic.

Step 1: Get a referral from your GP for Medicare rebate (optional). Book an appointment using the booking button.

Step 2: Using a smartphone, tablet/computer, open the video appointment link in your email to start the video consultation.

Treat your video appointment like you would any other specialist appointment; Discuss your condition, show the dermatologist your problem and your dermatologist will make a treatment plan. Prescriptions and/or blood test forms will be sent to you/pharmacy via email/fax. This ensures a rapid commencement of management if needed. A review appointment can be made if needed.

Booking an appointment is quick and easy through our secure online booking system. Simply choose your preferred dermatologist (where available), select a suitable appointment time and complete the online booking process.

The dermatologists who started this service firmly believe that everyone in Australia deserves expert level care for their skin. These dermatologists have spent time working in rural and regional Australia and saw the long distances some people must travel to see a dermatologist. This kind of travel is disruptive to jobs and family life and can be at great cost. That is where Dermo Direct can help. Video appointments connect you directly with your chosen dermatologist, allowing the consultation to take place from your living room. These kind of services are not restricted to the regional areas, however and we will gladly provide a service to anyone, anywhere in Australia.

Yes. Our teledermatology service is available nationwide for patients residing in Australia.

City or country, Gold Coast or Goulburn; Anyone can make a booking and use this service (if you are under 16 years of age – please have a parent/guardian present).

Yes. All your doctors are Fellows of the Australasian College of Dermatologists. This is the peak training institution for dermatology in Australia. Our dermatologists all had to first obtain their medical degree (ie become a doctor), then undergo medical specialist training in dermatology and be awarded Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists. On average, the time taken to complete all the above training and become a specialist dermatologist is about 15 years.

Appointments are usually available within a few days, depending on demand and specialist availability.

Yes, you can book an appointment from outside of Australia. However, please note that you must be physically in Australia at the time of your appointment to receive the consultation, as our teledermatology services are only available within Australia.

Yes, all Fellows of the Australasian College of Dermatologists are trained to assess and treat skin conditions that affect children. For the booking process and video consultation, a parent/guardian needs to be present for those under 16 years of age.

Referrals & Medicare

You don’t need to have a GP referral to book a consultation and use our service. However, if you want to be eligible for a Medicare rebate, you will need an active GP referral. For subsequent reviews of the same skin problem, you can also book a review appointment if your GP referral is still active.

Yes, absolutely. If you’ve received a referral to a dermatologist who isn’t part of Dermo Direct, you can still choose to book with one of our doctors. Just upload your existing referral when booking your appointment – we’ll take care of the rest.

If you have a GP referral, you are eligible for Medicare rebates. Over the course of your treatment (3 to 5 appointments), the total Medicare rebate you can expect to receive will range from $160 to $240, depending on the number of visits required.

This rebate helps offset the cost of your consultations, making the treatment more affordable.

Medicare rebates are valid for ALL patients with an active GP referral.

Go to book an appointment and select an appointment type, and then all you have to do is have an active GP referral (you can upload this during the booking process, or your GP has faxed/emailed your referral already) and follow the prompts.

We handle all Medicare claims on behalf of you, eliminating the need for manual reimbursement processes.

No. Dermo Direct is a private specialist dermatology service and consultations are not bulk billed.

Patients with a valid GP referral may be eligible to claim a Medicare rebate for eligible consultations.

Dermo Direct is a private specialist dermatology service. Our consultation fees reflect the expertise of Australian specialist dermatologists and the delivery of personalised, evidence-based care.

Eligible patients with a valid GP referral may still receive a Medicare rebate for eligible consultations.

Fees & Payments

When you book an appointment online, the full fee will be charged to your credit card upfront. If you cancel prior to the virtual consultation, a cancellation fee of $50 will be charged and the remainder will be refunded to your credit card. A FULL fee will apply for a non-attended appointment.

If you are eligible for Medicare rebate, we will take care of your Medicare claims process on your behalf.

By law, Australian private health insurance does not offer cover for out-of-hospital medical services. Medicare covers these services. However, overseas international insurance for non-Australians often covers it. It usually covers the same rebate as Medicare but you need to check with your insurance provider.

If you’ve seen one of the doctors in person at Dermo Direct within the last 12 months, you may qualify for the review appointment rate when booking online, rather than paying the initial appointment fee. To receive this rebate, a valid GP referral dated within the past 12 months is also required. If it has been more than 12 months since your in-clinic visit or GP referral, you will need to book an initial online appointment at the standard rate.

Consultations & Treatment

No. Dermo Direct does not provide online skin cancer or mole checks.

These assessments require an in-person examination and may require specialised equipment, dermoscopy or procedural treatment that cannot be performed through teledermatology.

Our online service is suitable for many other skin, hair and nail conditions.

Yes, prescriptions can be issued electronically after your consultation, where clinically appropriate.

During a typical course of isotretinoin treatment, patients are usually seen 3 to 5 times. These appointments are spaced throughout the treatment to monitor progress, manage any side effects, and adjust dosages as necessary.
