$106 million for permanent telehealth for Australian patients

Dermo Direct Teledermatology > News > $106 million for permanent telehealth for Australian patients

Telehealth has won Morrison Government’s patronage as a result of which the Government has decided to allocate $106 million spread over four years to support permanent telehealth services. This move will facilitate greater flexibility for both patients and doctors by allowing GPs, specialists, and other health professionals to continue their telephone or online consultation

Telehealth’s contribution towards Australia’s universal health care has been significant during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Telehealth has made the possibility of offering the best care to hundreds of thousands of Australian patients during the COVID-19, a reality, and its flexibility to health care is remarkable.

More than 86.3 million COVID-19 MBS telehealth services have been delivered to 16.1 million patients, since early March 2020, and $4.4 billion Medicare benefits have been paid. More than 89,000 health care providers have used telehealth services.

Out of $106 million, $31.8 million goes towards Workforce Incentive Program (WIP) to provide additional funding to general practices and telehealth items will be added in the calculation of the Standard Whole Patient Equivalent (SWPE).
